Macropodus spechti
Also known as: Specht's Paradise Fish, Black Paradise Fish (Vietnam), Vietnam Paradise Fish
Origin: Vietnam
Macropodus spechti was long confused with M. opercularis but is now recognised as a distinct species native to central Vietnam. It tends to have darker, more contrasting body barring and a slightly more elongated body profile compared to the classic paradise fish.
Cold tolerance is excellent, making it suitable for unheated aquariums throughout the year in temperate climates. Like all paradise fishes it is a labyrinth breather and must access the surface freely.
Specht's Paradise Fish is less frequently seen in the trade than M. opercularis, making it a desirable species for enthusiasts wishing to keep the less common members of the genus. Care requirements are essentially identical to the other paradise fishes.
Water: 15–25°C, pH 6.0–8.0, GH 4–18; adaptable and cold-tolerant; no heater needed in most rooms. Tank: minimum 80 L, well-planted with floating plants and a secure lid. Feeding: omnivore — pellets, flake, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and small live invertebrates. Breeding: bubble-nester; male builds nest under floating plants and guards eggs and fry. Compatibility: semi-aggressive; one male per tank; avoid nano fish and long-finned companions.
