Apistogramma nijsseni
Origin: Peru (captive-bred variant)
Apistogramma nijsseni 'Spectacled' is a variant of the Panda Cichlid from Peru exhibiting enhanced blue peri-orbital markings that create a distinctive spectacle-like facial pattern in mature males. Like the standard nijsseni, it requires soft, acidic water and a well-structured tank with caves and plant cover. Females adopt a striking lemon-yellow breeding dress and are fiercely dedicated cave-spawning parents.
Maintain soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–7.0, GH <8) with tannin supplementation for best condition. Provide multiple caves, coconut shell halves, and dense planting. Feed live and frozen micro prey: baby brine shrimp, micro worms, Cyclops. Keep as 1 male with 2–3 females per territory. The striking female breeding colour is one of the most beautiful in the genus.
