Pterygoplichthys sp. (L073)
Also known as: Spectacled Pleco, L073 Pleco, Big-eye Araguaia Pleco
Origin: Rio Araguaia, Brazil
The Spectacled Pleco (L073) is a medium-to-large loricariid from the Rio Araguaia drainage of central Brazil, named for the notably large, prominently ringed eye that gives the impression of spectacles framing its spotted face. This subtle but charming feature distinguishes it from related species and makes it an interesting subject for pleco enthusiasts.
L073 is primarily herbivorous and grazes extensively on algae and biofilm. In the aquarium it benefits from abundant driftwood, algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables. Moderate to strong water flow and regular water changes maintain the fish in prime condition. It is generally hardy and adaptable for an L-number, making it suitable for experienced community keepers.
The Spectacled Pleco is peaceful and integrates well with larger community fish. It can be kept alongside South American cichlids, large tetras, and other loricariids in a well-structured aquarium. Provide one cave per pleco and ensure the tank has sufficient space for all bottom-dwelling species to establish territories without conflict.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; moderate flow, regular maintenance. Tank: 200 L minimum; driftwood, smooth rock caves, moderate current. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina wafers, algae pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood grazing. Breeding: Cave spawner; conditioning with improved diet and water quality may trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with larger South American community species.
