About

Schistura spekula is a described Thai species identified by the characteristic specular or mirror-like dark spot (speculum) on its dorsal surface, a consistent marking that distinguishes it from many otherwise similar-looking congeners. It inhabits clear, fast-flowing hill streams across Thailand and displays the bold, inquisitive temperament common to the genus — investigating every new addition to the aquarium and establishing territories around preferred boulder groups.

In the aquarium, S. spekula is a lively and attractive species that remains active throughout the day. Its small size and moderate aggression level make it manageable in groups provided the tank has sufficient rocky structure to break sight lines and allow subordinate individuals to retreat. The species accepts a wide range of prepared foods and is among the easier Schistura to maintain in good condition.

Colour intensity in this species is strongly linked to water quality and stress level — fish in suboptimal conditions lose their markings and become dull, while healthy individuals in clean, cool, flowing water display rich contrast between their dark spots and pale body ground colour. Regular water changes are the single most important factor in maintaining peak appearance.

Care Guide

Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; moderate to strong flow; clean water with low nitrates — colouration is a reliable health indicator. Tank: 70 L minimum; rocky structure with multiple boulder groups to create separate territories; smooth pebble or fine gravel substrate. Feeding: Omnivore — sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp; will also graze biofilm; feeds readily in captivity. Breeding: Rarely bred; condition with cool water changes and increased flow; territorial males may need separation from females after spawning. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; peaceful with dissimilar species; avoid housing with long-finned or slow-moving tankmates.
