Procambarus cf. spiculifer
Also known as: Spiculifer Crayfish, Southeastern Crayfish
Origin: Southeastern USA
Procambarus cf. spiculifer is a species complex from the streams and rivers of the southeastern United States, displaying a handsome blue-grey and rust-speckled coloration that varies somewhat between populations. It is a moderately sized crayfish with sturdy chelae and a bold temperament typical of the genus.
In aquaria, P. cf. spiculifer adapts well to standard freshwater conditions and is best maintained in tanks with a natural stream-style setup — smooth cobble substrate, driftwood, and minimal planting. It is not suitable for planted tanks, as it will consume or uproot vegetation.
This species is appreciated by hobbyists seeking to maintain native North American crayfish diversity in captivity. It is moderately territorial and does best as a solitary specimen or in a large species tank where individual territories can be established.
Water: 16–24°C, pH 6.8–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; natural stream-quality water preferred. Tank: minimum 80 L, cobble and slate substrate, caves, driftwood; avoid plants. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, leaf litter, occasional invertebrate protein. Breeding: seasonal; cooler temperatures trigger conditioning; female broods clutch under pleopods. Compatibility: territorial — keep singly or with robust fast fish in upper water column.
