Pomacea diffusa
Also known as: Spike-topped Apple Snail, Diffusa Apple Snail
Origin: South America
Pomacea diffusa is distinguishable from other apple snails by its elongated, spired shell tip and smaller adult size. It is one of the most plant-safe apple snail species, preferring algae, biofilm, and decaying vegetation over healthy plant tissue. It lays clutches of pink eggs above the waterline and is an engaging, active aquarium resident.
Water: 18–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0; calcium-rich hard water is essential to prevent shell erosion. Tank: Minimum 40L with a secure, close-fitting lid; leave air space above the waterline for egg-laying. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched greens, biofilm; supplement with cuttlebone for calcium intake. Behaviour: Curious and active day and night; will explore every surface and corner of the aquarium. Compatibility: Safe with most community fish; avoid cichlids or fish known to nip at snail antennae.
