Pila conica
Origin: Southeast Asia
Pila conica is a medium-sized freshwater apple snail with a distinctive conical, spired shell that sets it apart from the more rounded Pomacea species. An omnivorous scavenger, it breaks down decaying plant matter and leftover food in the aquarium. Best kept in aquariums without delicate or fine-leafed plants, as it may consume soft vegetation alongside detritus.
Provide adequate calcium in the water (GH 8–15) for healthy shell formation. Feed supplemental calcium-rich wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets. Avoid copper-based medications — lethal to all snails. Keep with robust plants (Java Fern, Anubias, Bolbitis) rather than fine-leafed stem plants that may be consumed. Safe with most community fish. Provide a lid with air gap — these snails breathe air regularly.
