Chilodus spilopleura
Also known as: Spilopleura Headstander, Barred Headstander
Origin: Orinoco and Amazon basins, South America
Chilodus spilopleura is a close relative of the Spotted Headstander (C. punctatus) but is less frequently encountered in the hobby. It shares the same head-down feeding posture and fine dark spotting across a silvery body, though the spot pattern and size may differ subtly between individuals and localities. Native to both the Orinoco and Amazon systems, it is found in warm, slightly acidic, heavily vegetated waters.
In the aquarium, C. spilopleura requires similar conditions to C. punctatus: soft acidic water, moderate flow, and a well-planted environment with grazing surfaces. It is a peaceful species that coexists well with other soft-water Amazonian fish. Groups of five or more are recommended to minimise any stress and encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Feeding is primarily herbivorous: spirulina-enriched foods, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets with plant content form the staple, supplemented with frozen daphnia and spirulina brine shrimp for variety.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15, KH 1–8). Tank: 120 L minimum; planted with open areas; rocks and driftwood for grazing; moderate flow. Feeding: Spirulina flake, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets; frozen daphnia as supplement. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; egg-scatterer requiring soft acidic water. Compatibility: Peaceful with similar-sized South American community fish.
