Serrasalmus spilopleura
Also known as: Spilopleura Piranha, Gold Piranha, Spotted Piranha
Origin: Paraná-Paraguay basin, South America
Serrasalmus spilopleura ranges through the Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay river systems of southern South America, making it one of the more cold-tolerant piranha species. Adults display golden-yellow flanks peppered with fine dark spots, bright red eyes, and a boldly coloured ventral region in prime specimens.
Like all Serrasalmus, it is a solitary predator that must be housed alone. Its southern range makes it more amenable to temperatures in the low 20s, broadening the window for maintenance. Juveniles are commonly available and develop attractively. Long-term care requires a very large tank as adults can reach 35 cm.
Verify local laws before keeping; piranha species are controlled or banned in many jurisdictions.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, moderately soft (2-12 dGH); tolerates slightly harder water than most Serrasalmus due to its southern origin. Tank: Minimum 450L; robust external filtration; provide root-work and cave structures; tight-fitting lid mandatory. Feeding: Whole prawns, fish fillets, earthworms; feed every 2-3 days; remove uneaten food promptly. Breeding: Rarely accomplished; nest-guarding behaviour reported in very large setups; sexing is difficult. Compatibility: Solo housing only; dangerous handling; check legal status in your country or state before purchase.
