Premnas biaculeatus
Origin: Indo-Pacific (Red Sea to Queensland)
Premnas biaculeatus (Spinecheek or Maroon Clownfish) is the largest clownfish in the hobby, recognised by prominent spines on its cheeks and its deep maroon-red body with three white bars. Females grow impressively large and become increasingly dominant — the established female is the master of the territory and will aggressively defend her anemone host. A dramatic centrepiece for any sizable reef aquarium where its personality commands attention.
Provide a large anemone host (Entacmaea quadricolor preferred) or substantial coral surrogate. Keep as a single male-female pair — adding additional maroon clownfish results in intense aggression. Feed varied omnivore diet of mysis, brine shrimp, and marine pellets. Introduce the smaller, younger fish first to establish hierarchy, then add the larger one. Beware of biting during maintenance near the host anemone.
