Cobitis taenia
Also known as: Spined Loach, Spined Spiny Loach, Common Spiny Loach
Origin: Europe (widespread)
Cobitis taenia is the type species of the genus and one of the most widely distributed freshwater fish in Europe, found from the British Isles east to central Russia. It inhabits slow-flowing rivers, streams, and ponds with fine sand and silt substrates, where it buries itself with remarkable speed leaving only its eyes exposed. The characteristic pattern of dark blotches and a lateral stripe on a pale golden body is highly attractive.
In the aquarium, Cobitis taenia requires cool, well-oxygenated water and deep, fine substrate — ideally at least 5 cm of very fine sand — to allow natural burrowing. It is a peaceful species that poses no threat to any tankmate, though its own small size makes it vulnerable to larger or predatory fish. A group of three to five individuals shows the best behaviour.
Feeding consists of small sinking foods including micro pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, and finely chopped bloodworm. As a temperate species it benefits from a seasonal cool period in winter, which is thought to improve long-term health and is a prerequisite for breeding. The Spined Spiny Loach is an excellent subject for a European cold-water biotope aquarium.
Water: pH 6.5–8.0, temperature 10–22°C, well-oxygenated, gentle flow. Tank: 80 L minimum; deep fine sand essential, minimal décor, cool water critical. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, finely chopped bloodworm. Breeding: Possible with seasonal cooling; spawns over fine substrate in spring. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with gudgeon, minnows, and other European coldwater fish.
