Copella arnoldi
Also known as: Splash Tetra, Spraying Characin, Jumping Characin
Origin: Trinidad, Venezuela, Guyana
Copella arnoldi, the Splash Tetra, is native to the coastal rivers of Trinidad, Venezuela, and Guyana. Its most remarkable trait is its breeding behaviour: pairs leap from the water in synchrony to deposit eggs on leaves above the surface, with the male periodically splashing water up to keep them moist. A peaceful and moderately sized tetra that rewards patient observation with fascinating natural behaviour.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 80 L minimum; a tight-fitting lid is essential; floating plants and low waterline provide breeding sites. Feeding: Accepts flake, pellets, and readily takes live or frozen insect larvae and daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful; best in groups; males jump with females during breeding — ensure a secure lid. Compatibility: Good community fish with similar-sized peaceful tetras, corydoras, and rasboras.
