Aphyosemion splendopleure
Also known as: Splendid Killifish, Splendopleure Killifish
Origin: Nigeria, Cameroon
Aphyosemion splendopleure is one of the more visually stunning members of the genus, native to forest streams in Nigeria and Cameroon. Males display brilliantly blue iridescent body colouration extensively overlaid with red spotting, and the fins are vivid red edged with white. Unlike many Aphyosemion, the caudal fin is rounded rather than lyrate, giving the species a compact and distinctive silhouette.
A. splendopleure is a moderately easy killifish suitable for the intermediate keeper. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water and a 40 L species or quiet community tank. Eggs are deposited on a fine-leaved plant or spawning mop and incubated in damp peat for two to three weeks. The species is relatively robust compared to some Aphyosemion and tolerates moderate community conditions.
For keepers who find the more subdued Aphyosemion species underwhelming, A. splendopleure offers an explosion of colour in a compact and manageable package. Its vivid colouration rivals many reef fish and makes it a conversation piece in any aquarium.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately soft water (GH 2–10). Tank: 40 L species or peaceful community tank with plants and a spawning mop. Feeding: Live Artemia, Daphnia, frozen bloodworm, and micro-pellets; feed daily. Breeding: Collect mop weekly; incubate eggs in damp peat for 2–3 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with small, calm community fish.
