Yasuhikotakia splendida
Also known as: Splendid Loach
Origin: Mekong basin
Yasuhikotakia splendida lives up to its name as one of the most visually compelling of the smaller Yasuhikotakia species. Endemic to specific drainages in the Mekong basin, it displays a mosaic of warm orange, golden, and brown tones overlaid with a complex pattern of bars and spots that becomes more vivid in well-conditioned adults. Its relative scarcity in the hobby makes it a prized acquisition for loach enthusiasts.
Care requirements mirror those of other Yasuhikotakia: a well-filtered, stable aquarium with fine sandy substrate, abundant caves, and moderate flow. The Splendid Loach is a social fish and must be kept in groups; a minimum of five individuals is recommended. Tankmates should be peaceful and robust enough not to be intimidated by the loaches' boisterous social interactions.
Feeding includes high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and occasional live foods. Water quality must be maintained to a high standard, as declining conditions quickly result in fading of the characteristic colour.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28°C, soft to moderate hardness, pristine quality essential. Tank: 80 L minimum; fine sand, caves, driftwood, and moderate lighting to showcase colour. Feeding: Premium sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, mysis, and occasional live invertebrates. Breeding: Rare in captivity; no reliable method documented. Compatibility: Peaceful toward other species; keep in groups of 5+ of own kind.
