Pangasius larnaudii
Also known as: Spot Pangasius, Spot Pangasiid, Larnaud's Pangasius
Origin: Southeast Asia (Mekong basin — Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam)
Pangasius larnaudii is a large pangasid catfish native to the Mekong basin, recognisable by a bold black humeral spot behind the gill cover and a strongly forked caudal fin. It is an important commercial food fish across Southeast Asia and is occasionally imported into the aquarium hobby as a specialty item for large-fish collectors. In the wild it inhabits the middle and upper reaches of major Mekong tributaries.
In the aquarium, Pangasius larnaudii requires very large accommodations with powerful filtration and good oxygenation. It is a large, active swimmer that occupies the mid-water column and, unlike P. hypophthalmus, is less prone to extreme skittishness. It is an omnivore accepting large sinking pellets, prawns, earthworms, and occasional vegetable matter.
This species is peaceful with large tankmates and is best housed with other big, robust fish such as large cichlids, arowanas, and other pangasids. Its bold humeral spot and powerful swimming make it a distinctive and impressive display fish for specialist aquariums. Purchase should be considered only by aquarists with the space to properly accommodate its eventual size.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15); strong filtration and oxygenation. Tank: 2000 L minimum for adults; powerful filtration; open mid-water swimming space. Feeding: Large sinking pellets, whole prawns, earthworms, plant matter; omnivorous. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria; migratory seasonal spawner. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust fish; will consume small fish.
