Genicanthus melanospilos
Origin: Indo-Pacific (Philippines, Indonesia)
The Spotbreast Angelfish (Genicanthus melanospilos) is a sexually dichromatic species from the Indo-Pacific, where males exhibit bold black horizontal stripes on a pale blue-white body, and females are yellow above with a white underside. Planktivorous in the wild, it is one of the safest Genicanthus angels for reef aquariums — far less likely to nip at corals than most Pomacanthus or Holacanthus species. A stunning display fish that thrives in larger systems with strong water flow.
Provide a large, high-flow reef or FOWLR aquarium (400L+). Feed multiple small meals daily of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, frozen zooplankton, and quality angelfish preparations. Planktivorous by nature — does not graze on live rock as aggressively as other large angels. Can be kept as a male-female pair or a harem (1M:2-3F) in very large systems. Genicanthus are among the most reef-safe large angelfish.
