Dicrossus maculatus
Also known as: Spotted Checkerboard Cichlid, Maculatus Cichlid
Origin: South America
Dicrossus maculatus is closely related to D. filamentosus but is distinguished by its more prominent spot pattern and subtly different body proportions. It inhabits clearwater and blackwater Amazonian drainages and shares the same demanding water chemistry requirements as its congener. Males display vivid fin coloration and spotted patterning when in optimal condition.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (GH 0-4); clean, low-conductivity water essential. Tank: 60L minimum, dark substrate, leaf litter, caves, dense fine-leaved planting. Feeding: omnivore — micro live/frozen foods strongly preferred; careful dry food introduction. Behaviour: peaceful; mildly territorial during spawning; pair or trio (1M:2F). Compatibility: blackwater biotope tank or species tank; small non-competitive tetras.
