Corydoras coriatae
Also known as: Spotted Cory, Coriatae Cory
Origin: Brazil (Rio Purus, Amazonas)
Corydoras coriatae is a moderately sized cory from the Rio Purus drainage in Amazonas state, Brazil. Its pattern of irregular dark spots and blotches over a tan to pale golden body is archetypal of the genus, yet the species remains largely unknown outside specialist circles due to infrequent export.
In the aquarium it is an undemanding fish that adapts well to a range of soft to moderately hard water parameters. Like most of its relatives from the upper Amazon, it appreciates slightly warmer temperatures and good oxygenation. A sandy substrate is essential; coarse gravel will abrade the sensitive barbels over time, leading to infection and poor health.
This species does best in groups of six or more and will readily mix with other peaceful community fish. Its feeding behaviour — systematically working across the substrate in tight formation — is highly entertaining to observe. Feed a varied diet that includes sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates, and occasional vegetable matter.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 23–27°C; good oxygenation and low nitrates important. Tank: 80 L or larger with fine sand, moderate planting, and open swimming areas between décor. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, and blanched spinach or zucchini. Breeding: Typical cory spawning behaviour; cool water change to trigger; eggs laid on flat surfaces. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; excellent addition to Amazonian biotope setups.
