Brachydanio nigrofasciatus
Also known as: Spotted Danio, Dwarf Spotted Danio
Origin: Myanmar
Brachydanio nigrofasciatus, the Spotted Danio or Dwarf Spotted Danio, is a compact and energetic species from the streams and rivers of Myanmar. Unlike the classic horizontal-striped danios, it sports a pattern of dark spots and a partially broken lateral stripe, giving it a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from its better-known relatives.
It is one of the smaller danio species, rarely exceeding 4 cm, making it appropriate for nano and mid-sized aquariums. It shares the genus' characteristic hardiness and adaptability, tolerating a range of water parameters without difficulty. In a group of eight or more it displays lively schooling behaviour and frequent courtship interactions.
The Spotted Danio is an excellent choice for a peaceful community tank alongside other small cyprinids, nano tetras, and dwarf shrimp, provided the shrimp are too large to be eaten. Dense planting provides security and enhances the natural appearance of the setup.
Water: Temperature 20–25°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; adaptable to most tap-water conditions with regular maintenance. Tank: Minimum 40 L, planted with open mid-tank swimming space; secure lid necessary as the species is a known jumper. Feeding: Accepts flake, micro-pellets, and all small frozen foods; live daphnia and baby brine shrimp eagerly taken. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; spawns over fine plants or spawning mop; separate breeding tank with marbles or mesh bottom prevents egg predation. Compatibility: Peaceful with all small non-aggressive fish; compatible with dwarf shrimp larger than 1 cm and other nano cyprinids.
