Potamotrygon jabuti
Also known as: Spotted Freshwater Stingray, Jabuti Ray, Guaporé Stingray
Origin: Guaporé & Mamoré rivers, Bolivia & Brazil
Potamotrygon jabuti was described in 2016 from the Guaporé and Mamoré river drainages of Bolivia and Mato Grosso state, Brazil — part of the Madeira River system. Its pale to cream disc is marked with irregular, brown-edged spots of varying size, creating a pleasing and distinct pattern that differs from both the ocellate P. motoro and the reticulate P. orbignyi. Being a recently described species, captive husbandry data remains limited, though its care requirements are assumed to follow standard potamotrygonid protocols. It is rarely imported and when available it is typically obtained through specialist South American fish importers. Its manageable adult size makes it practical for a dedicated stingray display. Captive breeding records are scarce but the species has been maintained successfully in specialist European collections.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (2–10 dGH); zero ammonia/nitrite; stable and clean conditions essential. Tank: Minimum 450L, fine sand, open wide base, efficient canister or sump filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawn, mussel, frozen bloodworm; feeds well once settled and confident. Breeding: Viviparous; limited captive records; condition with varied high-protein diet. Compatibility: Large, calm fish suitable; dedicated ray display recommended for best results.
