Garra spilota
Also known as: Spotted Garra, Spilota Garra
Origin: Myanmar, Thailand
Garra spilota is found in moderate to fast-flowing clear-water streams in Myanmar and Thailand, where it uses its flattened underside and oral disc to cling to rocks and graze algae and biofilm in swift current. It is marked with irregular dark spots on a grey-brown body, providing disruptive camouflage against the rocky stream substrates it inhabits. The pectoral fins are broad and held flat, further aiding grip in strong flow.
In the aquarium, Spotted Garra thrives in well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong current and a rocky or sandy substrate. It is more territorial than Garra rufa and should be housed with only one or two conspecifics unless the tank is large enough to offer multiple distinct grazing territories. It does not harm plants and is peaceful toward unrelated species.
Feeding is best achieved with algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, and blanched vegetables. Garra spilota also grazes biofilm and algae from all tank surfaces. Occasional frozen invertebrates provide useful protein supplementation. Regular water changes and clean, well-oxygenated conditions are essential for long-term health.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness; strong current and high oxygen required. Tank: 80 L minimum; rocky substrate, significant water movement, excellent filtration. Feeding: Herbivore/omnivore; algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, frozen invertebrates. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful with other species; mildly territorial with conspecifics — one per territory.
