Cirrhitichthys aprinus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Spotted Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys aprinus) is a boldly patterned reef fish with a white body covered in brown spots and blotches. Like other hawkfish, it perches motionless on coral heads and rocks before darting out to ambush small prey. Hardy and personable, it adapts readily to aquarium life and quickly becomes a recognisable individual personality. It will prey on small shrimp and similar invertebrates.
Provide live rock with elevated perches from which the hawkfish can survey its territory. Feed mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality frozen carnivore preparations. Do not house with small shrimp or invertebrates — will eat them. Generally peaceful towards dissimilar fish but may bully small, passive species. Reef-safe with corals. Does not require sand as it perches rather than sifting substrate.
