Chilodus punctatus
Also known as: Spotted Headstander, Headstander
Origin: South America (Orinoco and Amazon basins, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil)

The Spotted Headstander (Chilodus punctatus) is an unusual and interesting characin from slow-moving rivers and floodplain areas of the Orinoco and Amazon basins in Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil. It gets its common name from its distinctive feeding posture — swimming continuously at a 45° head-down angle as it browses aufwuchs (algae, biofilm, and microorganisms) from rock surfaces and substrate.
Its body is streamlined with a silver base color, a series of dark horizontal rows of spots running the length of the body, and a dark horizontal stripe. This combination of patterning, elongated body, and characteristic head-down posture makes it immediately recognizable and quite unusual-looking among community fish.
Spotted Headstanders grow to about 8–9 cm and are active, somewhat shy fish that prefer to be kept in groups of 3 or more for security. They are peaceful toward other fish but need adequate space and soft, acidic water that mirrors their native Amazonian habitat. They are primarily herbivorous and require vegetable matter as a major dietary component.
In a well-planted aquarium with driftwood and rock décor, Spotted Headstanders behave naturally — constantly grazing in their characteristic angled posture. They are a conversation piece in any community tank due to their unique posture and spotted patterning.
Water Parameters: Soft, slightly acidic water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 23–27°C, GH 2–12. Tannin-stained water is beneficial. Avoid hard, alkaline conditions. Stable parameters are important — they are sensitive to abrupt changes.
Tank Setup: Minimum 120 liters for a group of 3–5. Provide rocks, driftwood, and algae-covered surfaces for natural grazing behavior. A planted aquarium with robust plants (Anubias, Java fern) works well. Open mid-water swimming space. Good filtration. Subdued lighting.
Feeding: Herbivore-leaning omnivore. Offer spirulina flakes, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber), and sinking pellets. Supplement with occasional frozen brine shrimp or daphnia. Vegetable content is essential for long-term health. Feed twice daily.
Tankmates: Peaceful with other fish. Keep with other medium-sized peaceful South American species: tetras, corydoras, small cichlids, and similar. Avoid highly aggressive fish or small, fragile species that might be overwhelmed. Keep 3+ individuals for security.
Health: Sensitive to poor water quality and hard/alkaline conditions. Maintain soft, acidic water with weekly 25–30% water changes. Watch for ich and internal parasites. Adequate vegetable diet prevents digestive issues.
