Nemacheilus sp.
Also known as: Spotted Hillstream Nemacheilus, Asian Spotted Stone Loach
Origin: South and SE Asia
This Nemacheilus species represents a group of densely spotted river loaches from the hill streams of South and Southeast Asia, where scattered dark spots on a pale or olive background create excellent substrate camouflage. Nemacheilus is a large and taxonomically diverse genus encompassing dozens of species from across Asia, and trade specimens are frequently sold under generalised names pending formal identification. The spotted species in the trade tend to be robust and adaptable by hillstream standards.
In the aquarium, this Nemacheilus is active, sociable, and relatively straightforward to maintain compared to more demanding hillstream specialists. It thrives in well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water with a smooth pebble or gravel substrate and adapts readily to prepared sinking foods. The species is peaceful within its group and toward most community fish, making it a good entry point into the hillstream hobby.
As a beginner-accessible species, this Nemacheilus tolerates a slightly broader range of water conditions than Sewellia or Gastromyzon, but still requires better-than-average oxygenation and cleanliness. Temperature should remain below 26 °C and regular water changes are essential to maintain the fish in peak health and colouration.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; moderate flow and good oxygenation; more tolerant of water parameter variation than extreme hillstream specialists. Tank: 70 L minimum; smooth pebble substrate with rocky hiding areas; moderate directional flow from HOB or powerhead. Feeding: Omnivore — sinking pellets, spirulina wafers, frozen daphnia and bloodworm; easy to condition on varied prepared foods. Breeding: Rarely documented; condition with mild cooling and increased flow; scatter-spawner over gravel substrate likely. Compatibility: Peaceful; good community hillstream species; compatible with small barbs, danios, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, and other loaches.
