Origin: West Africa (Guinea to Liberia)
Hemichromis guttatus is a medium-sized jewel cichlid from the coastal drainages of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. It has a spotted pattern on its flanks with typical jewel-cichlid iridescence and is a dependable, attractive cichlid for keepers familiar with the genus. Like other Hemichromis, it becomes combative during breeding.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness. Tank: Minimum 100L; sturdy décor, caves, and scratch-resistant tank design. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, live and frozen worms, crustaceans, and small insects. Behaviour: Spawns on flat surfaces or in shallow pits; parents vigorously defend the spawning area. Compatibility: Best as a bonded pair alone or with large robust fish only.
