About

Loricariichthys maculatus has a wide distribution across river systems draining the Guiana Shield in Guyana, Venezuela, and northern Brazil. These rivers include both blackwater and clearwater types draining ancient geologically stable shield formations, and the fish shows some adaptability to different water chemistry types as a result. Its boldly contrasting dark spots against a pale cream-tan background make it one of the more visually striking Loricariichthys species.

In the aquarium, this species requires a spacious tank with a sand or fine gravel substrate and should be provided with some cover in the form of driftwood or flat rocks. It is an omnivorous species and will accept a diverse range of sinking foods, making dietary management easier than for strict herbivores. Regular large water changes are important to maintain the excellent water quality this species demands.

Loricariichthys maculatus is largely sedentary during daylight hours and most active at night. It is entirely peaceful and will ignore most tankmates, though it may compete with other large bottom-dwelling catfish for prime resting spots.

Care Guide

Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate (GH 2–12); adapts to blackwater or clearwater. Tank: 150 L minimum; sand substrate essential; some driftwood or flat rocks for cover. Feeding: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworm and daphnia, blanched vegetables. Breeding: Undocumented; presumed tube or crevice spawner. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable for large Guiana Shield or general South American community.
