Ancistrus sp. L174
Also known as: Spotted Medusa Pleco, L174, Medusa Bristlenose L174
Origin: Rio Negro, Brazil
Ancistrus sp. L174, a closely related and rarer form of the Spotted Medusa complex from the Rio Negro, displays an even more elaborately developed rostral tentacle arrangement than L104, combined with a particularly dense and evenly distributed white spotting on a very dark body. It is one of the most unusual and visually distinctive bottom-dwellers available in the specialist loricariid hobby.
Like L104, it requires soft, acidic blackwater conditions: pH 4.5–6.5, very soft water, warm temperatures of 26–30°C. Its natural habitat is the dim, tannin-stained waters of the Rio Negro basin where leaf litter and driftwood dominate the substrate. In the aquarium, replicating these conditions with driftwood, dried leaves, and subdued lighting is essential for long-term success.
The L174 is rarely seen in the trade and commands a premium price. It is an omnivore accepting a range of sinking foods from bloodworms and protein pellets to algae wafers. Males are territorial toward each other and should each have their own cave.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft blackwater; absolutely avoid hard or alkaline water. Tank: Minimum 100 L; driftwood, leaf litter, clay caves, dark fine substrate, dim lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; bloodworms, brine shrimp, high-protein pellets, algae wafers, Repashy. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; blackwater conditions and stable warm temperature required. Compatibility: Peaceful with blackwater community fish; males territorial — provide dedicated cave per individual.
