Dichotomyctere nigroviridis
Also known as: Albino GSP, Albino Green Spotted Puffer, White Spotted Puffer
Origin: Captive bred (wild type: Southeast Asia coastal rivers)
The albino form of Dichotomyctere nigroviridis is a selectively bred aquarium variant with a cream-white to pale yellow body in place of the wild-type green background. Spots are visible as pale rose-pink to faint grey circular marks on the depigmented body. Eyes are pinkish-red due to the absence of melanin. The albino form retains every characteristic of the wild-type green spotted puffer: the same adult brackish water requirements, the same aggressive fin-nipping temperament, the same need for regular hard-shelled prey, and the same solitary housing requirements. The albino gene does not affect hardiness when kept in correct brackish conditions, and these specimens can live as long as their wild-type counterparts if maintained properly. They are occasionally available from specialist breeders.
Water: Juveniles freshwater; adults brackish SG 1.005–1.008; pH 7.5–8.0; temperature 24–28°C; stable salinity. Tank: 80 L per adult; sandy substrate, salt-tolerant décor; robust filtration; no sharp edges. Feeding: Snails essential; mussels, clams, krill; hard prey several times weekly; watch beak growth. Breeding: Selectively bred; captive breeding possible in brackish breeding tank. Compatibility: Aggressive fin-nipper; solitary only; identical in temperament to wild-type GSP.
