Glossolepis maculosus
Also known as: Spotted Rainbowfish, Spotted Glossolepis
Origin: Papua New Guinea (Ramu River basin)
Glossolepis maculosus is unique among Glossolepis for the spotted or irregularly blotched patterning that overlays the silver-green body, setting it clearly apart from the more uniformly coloured members of the genus. These spots or blotches are dark brown to black and are most pronounced in dominant males, contrasting against the metallic body colour and vivid orange finnage. The species originates from the Ramu River system in Papua New Guinea.
This is a moderately large rainbowfish reaching up to 12 cm and requires a spacious aquarium. Care requirements align closely with other Glossolepis — moderately hard, slightly alkaline water, excellent filtration, and regular water changes. Because of its unusual patterning, it is of special interest to collectors who appreciate the diversity within the Glossolepis genus beyond just the flagship G. incisus.
Glossolepi maculosus is rarely available in the hobby and is most often found through specialist importers or hobbyist breeders in Papua New Guinea fish enthusiast circles. Breeding follows the standard egg-scattering protocol of the genus.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 23–28°C, moderately hard; consistent water quality important for spot visibility. Tank: Minimum 200 L; open swimming space; planting at margins to frame the unusual patterning. Feeding: Quality flake and pellets; live and frozen invertebrates regularly. Breeding: Egg scatterer on fine plants or mops; standard Glossolepis protocol. Compatibility: Peaceful; best in a PNG rainbowfish community or large mixed community tank.
