Chaetostoma sp. (L009)
Also known as: Spotted Rubber Pleco, L009 Pleco, Rubber Nose Pleco
Origin: Venezuela
The Spotted Rubber Pleco (L009) belongs to the Chaetostoma/Lasiancistrus group and originates from Venezuelan rivers. It has a characteristic flexible body and broad, flat head, with a dark base coloration overlaid with fine pale spots. This species tolerates a wider range of water parameters than many L-numbers, making it accessible to intermediate keepers.
In the wild L009 grazes on algae and biofilm from rocky surfaces in moderate current. Replicate this in the aquarium with smooth river stones, driftwood, and a moderate flow rate. A diet of algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables suits this herbivorous species well.
The Spotted Rubber Pleco is generally peaceful and coexists well with tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other community species. It is not particularly cave-dependent but appreciates sheltered resting spots under flat stones or driftwood during daylight hours.
Water: pH 6.0–7.8, temperature 23–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–10; adaptable to a range of conditions. Tank: 120 L minimum; smooth river stones, driftwood, and moderate water flow. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, and grazing on biofilm. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; cave or crevice spawner in nature. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent community fish compatible with most non-aggressive species.
