Chaetostoma sp. L142
Also known as: Spotted Rubbernose Pleco, L142, Rubbernose Pleco, Bulldog Pleco
Origin: Andean foothills, Colombia/Venezuela
Chaetostoma sp. L142, the Spotted Rubbernose Pleco, is a compact and charming loricariid from fast-flowing Andean foothill streams in Colombia and Venezuela. Its distinctive dome-shaped head, flexible rubber-like snout, and powerful suction-cup mouth are perfectly adapted for clinging to rocks and grazing algae in torrential current. The body is warm brown with a regular pattern of rounded dark spots.
Unlike most pleco species this Chaetostoma prefers cooler temperatures of 20–26°C, making it an ideal choice for aquariums that don't suit warm-water plecos. It does well in temperatures appropriate for goldfish, hillstream loaches, or temperate community fish. High oxygenation and good flow are essential regardless of temperature.
The Spotted Rubbernose is an efficient and dedicated algae grazer, accepting algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and spirulina tablets. It is entirely peaceful and makes a superb community fish. Breeding in captivity has been achieved in large, well-oxygenated setups.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness; high oxygenation and moderate to strong flow essential. Tank: Minimum 60 L; smooth rocks for clinging and grazing, moderate current, good filtration. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina tabs, blanched courgette, spinach, and cucumber. Breeding: Egg-layer on rock surfaces; achieved in captivity in well-oxygenated, cool, spacious aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; no aggression toward tankmates.
