Spotted Severum

Heros efasciatus (Spotted Severum) is a large and intelligent cichlid from the Amazon basin whose adults display intricate spotted and vermiculated markings across the face and flanks. Generally peaceful for its size, it can be kept in large community tanks with other robust South American fish. This species forms devoted pair bonds and is a rewarding open-water spawner when conditions are right.

Provide a large aquarium (300L+) with driftwood, hardy plants (Java Fern, Anubias), and open swimming space. Maintain slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5). Feed quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and blanched vegetables. Compatible with large South American cichlids, geophagus, and large tetras. May become semi-aggressive during spawning — provide visual barriers.
