Metynnis maculatus
Also known as: Spotted Silver Dollar, Maculatus Silver Dollar
Origin: Amazon and Paraguay basins, South America
Metynnis maculatus occurs across the Amazon and Paraguay basins and carries a clear pattern of irregular dark spots scattered across its silver flanks — a pattern that varies between individuals and becomes more visible with age and good conditioning. It was long confused with M. lippincottianus in the trade.
Care is identical to other Metynnis: herbivorous diet, large schools, soft to moderately hard water, and avoidance of soft-leaved plants. The spotted pattern gives it additional visual interest in a school and pairs well with other patterned South American species.
Not subject to piranha restrictions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; forgiving of a wider range than some Metynnis species. Tank: Minimum 200L for a school of 6; open mid-water space; robust décor. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina flake, blanched greens, pellets; varied diet enhances spot visibility. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; not commonly achieved in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent for large South American community tanks alongside cichlids and catfish.
