Channa punctata
Also known as: Spotted Snakehead, Dotted Snakehead, Common Snakehead
Origin: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan
Channa punctata, the Dotted or Spotted Snakehead, is one of the most widely distributed snakehead species in Asia, occurring throughout India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and into Southeast Asia. It inhabits an extraordinary range of water bodies from clean rivers to polluted ditches, rice paddies, and even roadside puddles, surviving seasonal drying by burrowing in mud. This resilience makes it the most robust snakehead available to the hobbyist.
In the aquarium it is predictably hardy and undemanding compared with rarer relatives. It accepts most meaty foods readily and tolerates a range of water conditions. However, it remains a predator and will consume smaller tankmates, and its jumping ability demands a secure lid. At 30 cm it is a medium-large fish requiring appropriate space.
Breeding in captivity follows the biparental open-water spawning pattern of the genus, with both parents guarding a surface egg cluster. Its wide natural distribution means the species may exhibit variation in temperature preference depending on population of origin.
Water: 20–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.8, very tolerant; regular water changes important despite hardiness. Tank: 300 L minimum; secure lid; moderate décor; robust filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; fish fillet, prawns, earthworms, large pellets; readily accepts most meaty foods. Breeding: Biparental open-water spawner; achievable in large aquariums with established pairs. Compatibility: With large robust fish only; will consume smaller tankmates.
