Sorubimichthys planiceps
Also known as: Spotted Sorubim, Planiceps Shovelnose
Origin: Amazon & Orinoco basins
Sorubimichthys planiceps is arguably the most dorsoventrally compressed pimelodid in existence, with a head so flat it appears almost like a living pancake. Its pale body is liberally spotted with dark blotches and it possesses extremely long, ribbon-like barbels. In the wild it inhabits large Amazonian and Orinocan rivers, lying motionless on the riverbed to ambush prey.
This species can reach 120 cm and is strictly for public-aquarium scale facilities. It is rarely imported but periodically becomes available through specialist South American importers. Captive individuals adapt slowly to prepared foods and may require weaning from live or freshly killed fish initially.
The Spotted Sorubim is a passive, low-energy fish that spends most of its time motionless but is capable of startling bursts of speed when feeding. It requires clean, well-oxygenated water and ample unobstructed floor space.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness; excellent oxygenation essential. Tank: Minimum 2000L; very large footprint, clean substrate, minimal décor, powerful filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; live or freshly killed fish initially, then weaned onto prawns and fillets; feed 2–3 times weekly. Breeding: No captive breeding documented. Compatibility: Solitary; only with very large fish that cannot be swallowed.
