Macrognathus aral
Also known as: Spotted Spiny Eel, Spot-Pattern Spiny Eel
Origin: South Asia
This spotted morph of Macrognathus aral is regularly imported from South Asian exporters and displays more pronounced and irregularly distributed dark spotting compared to standard populations. The contrasting dark spots on a pale cream to tan background give individual fish a visually appealing leopard-like quality that differs from the finer patterning of other small spiny eels.
As a form of the extremely widespread and adaptable aral species, it shares that species' tolerance for varied water conditions and broad temperature range. It is an ideal beginner's spiny eel: forgiving, unfussy about food, and manageable in size. A soft sandy substrate, hiding spots, and a sealed lid are the non-negotiable requirements.
Live and frozen bloodworm, tubifex, and small earthworms are eagerly consumed from the outset. Most individuals eventually accept quality sinking pellets. It is peaceful toward medium-sized community fish and works well in generalist Southeast or South Asian community setups.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, GH 3–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 100 L, fine sand, hiding spots, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; bloodworm, tubifex, earthworms, and sinking pellets. Breeding: Assumed egg-scatterer; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium community fish; avoid nano fish and shrimp.
