Lepomis punctatus
Also known as: Spotted Sunfish, Stumpknocker
Origin: Southeastern United States
Lepomis punctatus inhabits a range of habitats across the southeastern United States, from clear upland streams to weedy lowland rivers and ponds. It is a moderate-sized sunfish with an attractive spotted pattern — rows of small dark spots run horizontally along its olive-brown sides, and the opercular flap is fringed with red or orange. Breeding males develop increased colour intensity across the body and fins.
In the aquarium, Spotted Sunfish are less commonly kept than Bluegill or Longear Sunfish but reward the attentive keeper with their interesting behaviour and attractive markings. They are active foragers and appreciate substrate-level hiding spots as well as open mid-water areas for patrolling.
Like most centrarchids, they are territorial during spawning but otherwise manageable with other robust natives. They accept a variety of carnivorous foods and adapt to prepared diets well. Their moderate size and adaptable nature make them a solid choice for a species-focused or mixed native fish aquarium.
Water: 15–27 °C, pH 6.0–8.0, moderately soft to hard water; good oxygenation needed. Tank: 200 L minimum; mixed rocky and planted areas; open gravel zones for territory. Feeding: Earthworms, live/frozen invertebrates, insects; adapts well to quality pellets. Breeding: Gravel nest; male guards; reduce tankmate stress during spawning season. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; pairs well with comparably sized robust native species.
