Prionurus punctatus
Origin: Eastern Pacific (Mexico, Galapagos Islands)
The Spotted Surgeonfish (Prionurus punctatus) is a less commonly seen but striking species from the Eastern Pacific (Mexico to Galapagos), with a greyish body adorned with numerous small dark spots and — uniquely — multiple caudal spines rather than the single spine typical of most surgeonfish. A schooling species in the wild, it does best in groups in very large aquariums. A robust herbivore requiring generous quantities of marine algae and plant-based foods.
Requires a very large aquarium (600L+) with strong water flow and extensive live rock for grazing. Feed seaweed strips daily plus spirulina pellets, mysis, and herbivore preparations. Ideally kept in groups (3+) for natural schooling behaviour. From cooler Eastern Pacific waters — prefers slightly lower temperatures (22–26°C) than most Indo-Pacific tangs. Prone to ich — quarantine before display introduction.
