Rineloricaria lanceolata
Also known as: Spotted Whiptail Pleco, LDA030, Whiptail Catfish
Origin: Amazon basin, Peru/Brazil
Rineloricaria lanceolata, the Spotted Whiptail Pleco (LDA030), is a slender and graceful loricariid from slow to moderately flowing sandy-bottomed rivers of the Amazon basin. Its cream and brown mottled body with a regular pattern of darker markings provides effective camouflage against sandy and gravelly substrates, and its elongated whip-like tail filament completes a distinctive silhouette unlike any typical pleco form.
This species is entirely peaceful and makes an excellent community fish with no aggression toward any tankmates. It prefers soft substrates for rooting and moderate, gentle water movement. Planted aquariums with open sandy areas suit it well. Diet is primarily herbivorous with supplementary meaty foods welcomed.
Breeding is straightforward in captivity: the male guards the egg mass deposited on a flat surface, fanning the eggs until they hatch. The Spotted Whiptail is one of the more accessible and beginner-friendly loricariids in the trade, combining unusual appearance with ease of care.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately soft; gentle to moderate flow preferred. Tank: Minimum 80 L; fine sandy substrate, flat smooth stones, some planting; gentle current. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, blanched vegetables, Repashy, spirulina tabs; occasional bloodworms. Breeding: Male guards eggs on flat surface; easy to breed; fry robust and manageable. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; safe in planted aquariums; excellent community species.
