Pseudochromis springeri
Origin: Red Sea
Pseudochromis springeri is one of the most graphically striking dottybacks: a jet-black body bisected by a brilliant electric-blue stripe running from eye to tail. Endemic to the Red Sea and now reliably captive-bred, it is hardier and less wild-caught-stressed than many dottyback species. Its assertive personality means it will defend territory aggressively against similar-sized or smaller fish, but it ignores corals and invertebrates completely.
House singly unless keeping a proven pair. Provide plenty of rockwork caves and overhangs for territorial refuge. Feed meaty foods: mysis, copepods, finely chopped shrimp, and quality frozen blends twice daily. Will harass timid or similar-shaped fish; add last to established tanks. Captive-bred specimens adapt to aquarium foods quickly.
