Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: SRD Flowerhorn, Super Red Dragon
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The SRD (Super Red Dragon) Flowerhorn is a refined strain built on the same red-maximising selective breeding philosophy as other red Flowerhorn lines but with additional emphasis on pearl coverage, kok size, and overall body proportions. Top-grade SRD specimens display vivid red colouration from the lips to the tail, a generously proportioned kok, and dense pearlscale rows that shimmer under aquarium lighting.
The SRD line has been maintained and improved by dedicated breeders in Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan, with each breeding centre contributing slightly different emphases in body shape, fin shape, and colour intensity. This regional variation means that SRD Flowerhorns can vary somewhat between importers while sharing the core red-kok-pearl characteristics.
For aquarists seeking a Flowerhorn with maximum colour impact at a more accessible price than Golden Monkey or King Kamfa specimens, the SRD represents an excellent option. Husbandry follows standard Flowerhorn protocols.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20; regular water changes maintain red pigment intensity. Tank: 400L minimum; single specimen; bare bottom or smooth gravel; strong circulation and filtration. Feeding: Colour-enhancing Flowerhorn pellets; krill and shrimp for carotenoid supplementation. Breeding: Standard Flowerhorn breeding protocols apply; males are larger and more vividly coloured. Compatibility: Strictly solitary; highly aggressive towards any tank inhabitants.
