Malpulutta kretseri
Origin: Sri Lanka
Malpulutta kretseri is a stunning labyrinth fish endemic to Sri Lanka's southwestern lowland forest streams and swamps, where it inhabits dense shade and extremely soft, acidic blackwater. Males are elaborately colored with blue iridescence, dark spots, and spectacular elongated fin filaments. A bubble-nest breeder, it is listed as vulnerable in the wild due to deforestation and pollution; captive-bred specimens are therefore ecologically important. It demands high water quality and a very calm, species-appropriate setup.
Keep in a species or very peaceful biotope tank with soft, acidic blackwater and heavy tannin staining from Indian almond leaves or peat filtration. Tight-fitting lid essential as it is a strong jumper. Feed live or frozen micro-prey: Drosophila, small bloodworm, Artemia nauplii. Introduce only very gentle filtration — sponge filters are ideal. One male per tank to avoid fin-damage battles.
