Mastacembelus armatus
Also known as: Sri Lankan Spiny Eel, Sri Lanka Tire Track Eel
Origin: Sri Lanka
This Sri Lankan island population of the Mastacembelus armatus species complex has been treated variously as a distinct species or subspecies by ichthyologists. Visually it tends toward warmer golden and amber tones in its reticulated body patterning compared to mainland populations, an observation supported by its insular evolution in isolation on the island of Sri Lanka.
Care requirements are identical to those for the tire track eel: a very large aquarium, deep fine sand, strong filtration, and an absolutely sealed lid. As an island endemic it represents a biogeographically significant population of conservation interest, and captive specimens from responsible sources should be valued accordingly.
Earthworms, prawns, mussel, and sinking pellets are all consumed eagerly. It is peaceful toward large robust tankmates and works well alongside Sri Lankan cyprinids, catfish, and other large community species in a South Asian predator biotope. Its somewhat warmer colouration gives it a slightly different visual character from typical tire track eels.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 5–15, KH 2–8. Tank: Minimum 280 L, deep fine sand, strong filtration, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawns, mussel, frozen fish, and sinking pellets. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust South Asian community fish; avoid small species.
