Apistogramma staecki
Origin: Brazil (Tocantins, Araguaia)
Apistogramma staecki is a robust dwarf cichlid from the Tocantins and Araguaia river drainages of central Brazil, with males displaying a vivid red-orange flush on the lower body and a striking dark lateral spot. It tolerates slightly elevated pH compared to many Amazon Apistogramma species, making it more accessible to hobbyists without extremely soft water systems. Males vigorously defend spawning caves and the female guards the clutch; broods are typically manageable in size.
Provide a well-planted tank with ample caves, coconut shells, or ceramic breeding pots for spawning. Soft to moderately soft water with slight acidity brings out the best coloration. Feed a varied diet of frozen bloodworm, Artemia, daphnia, and quality cichlid micro-pellets. House with small peaceful community fish to serve as target fish that reduce intraspecific aggression.
