Pterophyllum scalare
Also known as: Standard Silver Angelfish, Silver Angelfish, Freshwater Angelfish
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Standard Silver Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is the foundational captive-bred form from which all modern angelfish strains originate. Its iconic disc-shaped body, sweeping triangular fins, and three bold black vertical bars on a reflective silver base have made it one of the most recognisable aquarium fish in the world.
Angels are mid-to-upper column swimmers that thrive in tall aquaria where their fin spread can be fully appreciated. They are generally peaceful with fish too large to eat, but will readily consume small nano fish and shrimp. Pairs form strong monogamous bonds and become noticeably territorial when spawning.
This species adapts readily to a wide range of water conditions, making it suitable for moderately soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes, a varied diet, and a well-planted tank will keep specimens in peak colour and health.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; perform 25–30% water changes weekly. Tank: Minimum 150 L tall format; provide driftwood, broad-leaved plants (Echinodorus, Vallisneria), and open swimming space. Feeding: Offer a varied diet of quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Egg-layers; pair will clean a vertical surface (broad leaf or slate), lay adhesive eggs, and guard fry aggressively. Compatibility: Keep with medium-bodied tetras, corydoras, and peaceful cichlids; avoid fin-nippers and very small fish.
