Fundulus notatus
Also known as: Starhead Topminnow, Blackstripe Topminnow
Origin: North America (Central USA)
The Starhead Topminnow inhabits slow-moving streams, ditches, and backwaters across the central United States. Its common name refers to the star-like iridescent spots on the top of the head visible at certain angles. Males display a crisp black lateral stripe on a silver-olive body.
Like other Fundulus species it is an active surface dweller, feeding on insects and small invertebrates that fall on the water. It appreciates surface cover such as floating plants and a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping.
This species is peaceful in groups and compatible with other small, similarly active North American coolwater fish. It is easy to care for and does not require a heater in most temperate homes.
Water: 10–24°C, pH 6.5–8.0, GH 5–15; cold-tolerant; no heater required in temperate environments. Tank: minimum 60 L, surface plants (water sprite, frogbit), secure lid to prevent jumping. Feeding: omnivore — floating flake, frozen daphnia, cyclops, small live invertebrates. Breeding: adhesive eggs deposited on fine-leaved surface plants; non-guarding; remove parents after spawning. Compatibility: peaceful; keep in groups; avoid pairing with tiny nano fish that may be predated.
