About

Ancistrus sp. L183, the Starlight Bristlenose, is a standout member of the Ancistrus genus native to the soft, acidic blackwater rivers of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Its jet-black body is scattered with tiny white to silver spots that resemble a star-dusted night sky, giving it the evocative name by which it is known. Males develop the characteristic Ancistrus bristle tentacles on the snout as they mature, adding a further point of interest.

As a blackwater Ancistrus, it requires acidic conditions — pH 4.5–6.5 — and very soft water. It will tolerate slightly less extreme conditions than some pure blackwater specialists but will not thrive in hard or alkaline water. Driftwood is particularly important both for its herbivorous grazing and as a source of biofilm. It accepts algae wafers, blanched vegetables, Repashy, and driftwood-derived biofilm enthusiastically.

Breeding follows the typical Ancistrus cave-spawning pattern and is readily achieved in captivity. Males are excellent fathers, guarding and fanning the eggs until the fry emerge. A small group with one male and multiple females works well. The Starlight Bristlenose is one of the most accessible blackwater pleco breeding projects.

Care Guide

Water: 26–30°C, pH 4.5–6.5, soft blackwater; driftwood tannins beneficial; avoid hard water. Tank: Minimum 80 L; driftwood essential, leaf litter, clay or PVC caves, dark fine substrate. Feeding: Herbivore; driftwood biofilm, algae wafers, Repashy Soilent Green, blanched courgette and spinach. Breeding: Prolific cave spawner; easy to breed; male guards and fans eggs; excellent beginner breeding project. Compatibility: Peaceful with blackwater community fish; males may chase each other but rarely cause injury.
