Salarias ramosus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Starry Blenny features a dark brown body profusely covered in small white spots and streaks, giving it a distinctive bespeckled, starry appearance. One of the hardiest blennies available to reef hobbyists, it grazes continuously on film algae, diatoms, and green microalgae across the substrate and rockwork. Its appealing pattern, vigorous appetite for nuisance algae, and adaptability to aquarium conditions have made it a reef aquarium staple worldwide.
Provide a mature reef aquarium with extensive algae-covered rockwork. Supplement with dried nori sheets or Spirulina wafers if natural algae is insufficient. Can become territorial toward other blennies or algae-grazing fish in smaller tanks. Generally ignores corals. Tends to perch on rocks and rubble. Acclimate carefully as wild specimens may initially refuse prepared foods.
