Myloplus asterias
Also known as: Starry Myloplus, Starry Pacu, Spotted Pacu
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Myloplus asterias, the Starry Pacu, is one of the most visually attractive members of its genus, distinguished by the constellation of fine dark spots scattered across its silver flanks — a pattern that gives it its common name. Native to the Amazon basin, it can reach 40 cm in exceptional specimens and represents a long-term commitment for any aquarist who takes it on. Young fish are particularly vivid and the spotting pattern tends to persist through adulthood.
Housing requirements are in line with other large Myloplus: a minimum 1000-litre aquarium, very powerful filtration, soft to moderately hard warm water, and regular large water changes. The tank should be bare of live plants — the Starry Myloplus will consume them — and decorated with robust hardscape of smooth rocks, large driftwood, and artificial vegetation if desired.
Myloplus asterias is peaceful and benefits from being kept in a small group of its own kind, or alongside other large, non-aggressive species. It has a particularly impressive presence in large, well-lit aquariums where its spotted pattern can be fully appreciated. Diet should prioritise plant matter — fresh vegetables, spirulina wafers, and herbivore pellets — with occasional fruit treats.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.5, 24–28°C; high-capacity filtration with good turnover. Tank: 1000 L minimum; open mid-water; artificial plants only; subdued or bright lighting both suitable. Feeding: Vegetable-based — cucumber, courgette, fruit, spirulina pellets, algae wafers. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with large non-aggressive fish; excellent display species for very large planted biotopes.
