Steatocranus bleheri
Also known as: Bleheri Blockhead, Dwarf Hump-head Cichlid
Origin: Congo River rapids
Steatocranus bleheri is one of the smaller members of the genus, reaching around 9 cm, and is generally considered more amenable to community living than the larger S. casuarius. Like its relatives it navigates its rapids habitat by hopping along the substrate, and in the aquarium it is an engaging, active fish that explores every corner of its territory.
In the aquarium S. bleheri pairs spawn in rock crevices or PVC pipe caves, and both parents guard the eggs and free-swimming fry with characteristic Steatocranus dedication. The species is less overtly aggressive than S. casuarius but will still defend its breeding site firmly.
Well-oxygenated water with moderate hardness and pH 6.0–7.5, plus strong water movement from a powerhead or spray bar, replicates the fast-water Congo habitat and keeps this species in optimal health. Smooth rocks and boulders should fill the lower half of the aquarium.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 4–14, KH 2–8); high oxygenation and strong flow. Tank: 100 L minimum; smooth rocks, boulders, and PVC pipe hides with a strong current. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, earthworms; accepts most meaty foods. Breeding: Cave-spawner; pair forms monogamous bond — both parents guard eggs and fry. Compatibility: More community-friendly than larger Steatocranus; keep with fast-moving midwater fish.
